U-Con Gaming Convention
November 12-14, 2010
Ann Arbor, Michigan
http://ucon-gaming.org

What is this? U-Con is a gathering of gamers and companies from around the region. Founded in 1988, the convention attracts gamers from Southeast Michigan, across the United States, and several other countries as well. You’ll find quality board and card games, collectible card games, miniatures, and role-playing events. The exhibitors’ hall contains unique gaming merchandise. U-Con is a great place to meet gamers and have fun!

Registration. The catalog of events is available at our website. All attendees must purchase a badge. Preregister by Nov 2: $20. At-the-door: $25. Students & Military: $20. Day passes available. Individual event tickets are additional and optional. Events run from 10am on Friday through 7pm on Sunday.

Guest of Honor Paul S. Kemp. Paul is a New York Times best-selling author of fantasy fiction. Many of his novels are set in the Forgotten Realms. However this year marked his first foray into the Star Wars universe with his novel, Crosscurrent, which quickly became a bestseller.

Game Donation Charity Drive. The Education Project for Homeless Youth is returning to U-Con this year for another Game Donation Drive. Last year's drive was a huge success, with U-Con attendees, vendors, and committee members donating nearly 100 games and $350. Because of this, every homeless student in Washtenaw county received a game as part of their holiday gift bag from EPHY last year. You can find out more about this year's drive, such as acceptable items for donation, at U-Con's website.

Game Design Contest.  U-Con is hosting a game design contest and we need players to determine the winner. Players are required to have a convention badge, the least costly of which is a $5 visitor badge. The contest will take place Saturday afternoon from noon to 6pm. Players need not stay the whole session, though we request they avoid leaving in the middle of a game.

Video Game Tournaments.  In cooperation with Wolverine Software.
Friday: Retro Games! Free and open to all. Play classic games for the Atari 2600 and NES. Prizes awarded.
Saturday: Halo Reach! $3 entrance fee and requires a badge. Prizes awarded.
Sunday: Super Street Fighter IV! $3 entrance fee and requires a badge. Prizes awarded.

More Events. Smithee Awards, Warhammer 40K Tournament, D&D, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, GURPS, Settlers of Catan and other Award Winning Board Games

Join us for U-Con 2010!  This is the largest gaming convention in Michigan!

U•Con is almost upon us. We will extend preregistration until Thursday November 5 at 11:59pm! Tell all your friends to come to the convention or check out the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVxoooBQ5ws

Come meet Sid Meier at one of his talks! http://www.ucon-gaming.org/feature/goh.php

To celebrate our guest of honor, we've recently added 4-player networked Civilization IV sponsored by Digital Ops! Purchase your tickets during preregistration to reserve your spot: http://www.ucon-gaming.org/events/db/search.php?s_game=Civilization+IV

We're also thrilled about our console games sponsored by Wolverine Soft. Come play 16-player networked Halo and Gears of War! Join us for Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution. Play Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart on the Wii. All video games will rotate with hourly on first-come-first-serve basis. Check out our schedule: http://www.ucon-gaming.org/feature/videogames.php

U•Con will host a board games drive. "Education Project for Homeless Youth" is looking for games that are easily portable (small and few pieces), suitable for a variety of ages, and good for a range of group sizes. Participating exhibitors will have games available for purchase which meet these criteria. The project takes direct donations of product or money and they will provide appropriate documentation for charitable tax deductions. More information on the charity is available here: http://www.wash.k12.mi.us/students/ephy.cfm

See you next week!

Friends!

This is a very exciting year for U-Con. We have so many new things, and so much of what you love will be back.

What’s new? We are honored to have Sid Meier as our guest. He’ll speak at several seminars on his games and career. We are also launching a new video game track. Our partners at Wolverine Soft (http://wolverinesoft.com) will bring console games. We have a schedule posted online for video games but it is subject to change. Additionally, we’re thrilled to host the Gen Con games library.

What’s the same? We have many GMs back who bring a wide variety of events. We have the Origins Awards Game Room, the Smithee Awards, Paint and Take, the auction, and of course the exhibitors hall. This U-Con has more events at the open of preregistration than we’ve ever had. However, we’ll continue to accept events until we have no space left. We’re also accepting volunteers, so contact us if you are interested.

Friends of U-Con!

We are come up to an important milestone for event submission. Please get your events in by 11:59p on Friday Sept 11. We will continue to accept events, but events which we receive after that time will be more difficult to place in the schedule (due to space limitations and already scheduled games, etc). So, please get your games in now. http://www.ucon-gaming.org/gm/submit.php

U-Con is looking forward to hosting the new video game track. We are working to develop a schedule of games and hope to have it ready when preregistration opens later this month.

Our Guest of Honor *Sid Meier* will join us to talk about the computer games industry and the games he's been involved with. We are thrilled to have him! http://www.ucon-gaming.org/feature/goh.php

See you in November!

Friends of U-Con!

Events are starting to fill up. We hope to make pre-registration and the event list available in early to mid September. Please get your events in soon. We are willing to add your events later, but having them in before the pre-registration deadline will assure that folks looking for events won't miss them. (http://www.ucon-gaming.org/gm/submit.php)

We also seek volunteers to help us keep the convention running smoothly. The positions we need are easy and not physically demanding. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the volunteer coordinator via our web form (http://www.ucon-gaming.org/contact/index.php). Like gamemasters, volunteers can also qualify to have their badge refunded.

We look forward to seeing you in November.

Friends of U-Con!

We are making preparations for U-Con 2009 this November. In that light, we have several exciting announcements.

U-Con is pleased to announce that *Sid Meier* of Civilization fame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier) will join us for U-Con this November. We are very excited to have him as Guest of Honor. As a famed computer game designer, he helps us to inaugurate our new track.

Which brings us to the second announcement: U-Con is proud to present a new video gaming track. We have arranged for console gaming with our friends at Wolverine Soft. If you are interested in running computer or console games (LAN party!) or sponsoring a video game event, please contact our Events Coordinator (http://www.ucon-gaming.org/contact/index.php).

We look forward to another great convention. We hope to see you in November!

U-Con 2009 [Apr. 1st, 2009|01:24 pm]
U-Con Gaming Convention

I have volunteered to be U-Con's chair once again. While I'm nominally the boss, this organization cannot thrive with out its volunteers. We are partners in bringing U-Con to fruition.

To that end, my theme for this year is 'everyone contributes.' As Con Chair, I want to focus on staff recruiting, retainment, and facilitation. I want others to take initiative on the pieces which interest them. I want each of you to look for things which could be done by the new help we hope to attract. I want to facilitate communication where there are other stakeholders. I want to make efficient use of meeting time by using email to receive status reports and reserving in person meetings for discussion items.

So, even if you haven't worked on U-Con for a while, please let us know what you'd like to do. I can work with you to bound your involvement to something which fits your availability. We can provide tasks or you can define the area on which you'd like to work. My goal is to assist you where I can, facilitate communication with committee members when necessary, and get out of the way.

I look forward to working with my U-Con partners this year.

Chair, U-Con 2009
